In short: Audio quality is a chain: recording, editing and mix, track version, codec and bitrate, sample format, channel layout, loudness and dynamic range, delivery, decoding, downmix or processing, active output route, speakers or headphones, room, playback level, and listener context. Diagnose one fixed excerpt through each layer instead of ranking sound from a single badge.

The same track can sound different on television speakers, headphones, and a multichannel system. Two tracks using the same codec can also differ because their sources, mixes, rates, channel layouts, and encoders differ.

Start with source and mix

Recording quality, microphone choice and placement, editing, noise reduction, equalisation, dynamics, spatial placement, and mastering shape the source before distribution. Dialogue, music, and effects may be intentionally balanced for a particular presentation.

A later volume increase cannot separate dialogue already masked inside a mix.

Identify the exact track

Record language, descriptive or alternate mix where applicable, channel label, codec, bitrate context, sample rate, bit depth when exposed, and source version. Track labels are clues whose current meaning must be verified.

Codec and bitrate answer different questions, and neither proves the source mix.

Separate volume and loudness

Volume control changes gain somewhere in the playback chain. Loudness describes perceived level and can be measured through defined programme-loudness methods for specific workflows. Content spectrum, duration, dynamics, channels, reproduction, and listener context matter.

Include dynamic range

The difference between quieter and louder moments can support impact but may challenge a room with noise or a low listening level. Dynamic-range control, night modes, dialogue processing, or normalisation can transform the result when supported.

Follow channels, downmix, and routing

A multichannel mix can be decoded, passed through, downmixed, virtualised, or mapped to available speakers. The active route may be device speakers, wired headphones, wireless headphones, a receiver, or another output. Missing or misrouted channels can affect dialogue and ambience.

Include delivery and decoding

Record errors, dropouts, track switches, resampling, and fallback only when exposed. Do not infer a decoder path from sound alone.

Include output and room

Speaker size and placement, headphones and fit, device processing, equalisation, room reflections, background noise, listening position, and safe level affect the result. Compare outputs at sensibly matched perceived level; louder can be preferred even when the underlying quality is not better.
